Have you seen this buggy?

blog_060126.png

Wanted: 12 month old push chair has not been seen since 10:00 pm on the night of the 26th of January 2006. The buggy was last seen in our building’s communal areas in London, Fulham. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Reward: Bottle of wine

Well, well, well… Things don’t always go as planned, don’t they?

Yesterday was one of these days where almost nothing goes well…

So let’s go back in time…

I woke up yesterday at my usual time, by the delicate tune of an hungry baby girl. The morning routine went as it does every morning. Bottle of milk, sitting on the sofa, watching “Télématin” (French program to ensure bilingual ability of the young one). Breakfast sitting on the high chair. Play in the flat while Daddy cleans, gets ready, checks email, etc…

Then I leave the flat around nine and something catches my eyes on my way out of the building. Actually the lack of something are the correct words here…

Thia’s buggy (stroller for our US cousins) has gone, vanished, disappeared…

Someone STOLE our baby girl’s push chair FROM THE FIRST (US English: Second) FLOOR OF OUR BUILDING…

I won’t start here and explain who I personally think committed this atrocious crime, but well, the day did really start with a bang…

What to do next?

  • Police… checked
  • Insurance…checked (and yelled, thanks to Sarah, they have accepted the claim)
  • New buggy… checked
  • Note in the hallway to let our neighbors know exactly how I feel about this all thing… checked…
  • Back to the office late when I really planned to be there on time… checked..

Day 3… We’re open for business

Quick note…

Thanks to JB’s help (checking the FTP outside of my office’s firewall), we are now up and running. The first basic pages are uploaded. Let’s now feed the monster!

Second day… We have a domain name

Well, after having tried some time yesterday to upload the first embryonic version of this site on my .mac personal home page, I have decided it was time to go for the real deal…

Site hosting…
So, where do I start? How did it go… RFP, enormous hosting fees, web designer with cool ideas (for a design site), marketing genius with stupid ideas (but he knows everything, apparently…), SLA, Operations team setting everything up…

Site online by December 2006

Luckily, my colleague Mike is in town and kindly offers to help!

Here we are, an hour later, domain is purchased, account is created, DNS is replicating, Mike’s hosting!

BTW, if you want to acquire a domain, I wouldn’t recommend GoDaddy.com at least, for their interface. I must admit that the one I just faced is almost as user friendly as a British GP is accurate in his diagnostic…) Apart from that, we’re set up…

Now, we wait. The domain spreads. Mike gives me access to my new home and we start uploading!!!

First Post: “Hello World!”

Well, finally, it has happened.

I have been talking about building my own web site for years. Never really found out what to put on it. That may explain why I spent several years of my life building sites for other people!

But now seems to be a good time. The blogosphere is exploding. Web 2.0 is upon us. Everybody and their dog have a site, so why not me? I have ideas, visions, things to express. I have a family and hence a zillion blurry pictures of my baby girl and wife. I have so many computers that I have to find special storage places for them all around our flat and so much web design, hosting and software engineering experience that I am using a template based application to build this site! Fabulous (pronounce it using Sharon Osbourne’s accent, please)

So, well, let’s post it for real! :)
