How many geeks does it take to fix a GPS system?!

So? How many techno geeks do you think it really takes to fix a Sat Nav system and add a new map to it?

Well, Angela (left) is currently visiting Los Angeles from London with little Nolly. Sylvain (right) has been living here for 4 years… Both of them used to be part of the technical team of Disney Internet Group International, one leading the IS group, the other leading the Operations groups. Both of them have now pretty respectable technology related positions in 2 of the largest media groups of the world… Here ends the introductions!

So, Angela on her way to LA decided to buy a little Sat Nav system at one of Heathrow’s duty free shop and has been trying to use it since…

First issue was that the device came without memory card, preventing her to add any new country map to her existing system, e.g. the US map.

Second issue seems to have been a very slow download speed when trying to acquire a 1 MB file from our WiFi network. My network being blamed, US cable speed being blamed…

Finally, after an hour of download, the map is in Angela’s PC and transfer to the GPS system is completed. Sadly, nothing seems to work. The device refuses to use the SD card and the map installed on it… So Sylvain decides to jump in and checks the card, the device and the installed software on the PC, without any changes in the result! The device still refuses to boot with the SD card inserted!

So, it was time for the logical approach to enter. Personal guess: The map and the on-board software are not compatible! A quick check at the application and a quicker check on Google (using the iPhone, obviously) tells me that there is a little version discrepancy and that I should hit the “Software Update” button before anything else…

This done, I realised that a/ the Sat Nav system was now working and b/ the 1MB map that seemed to have started so many questions and mockeries about my cable connection (I admit, not the usual 8 to 24 MB you can get in Europe but still a steady 5 MB) was in fact close to 1 GB… Yup, 1024 times bigger than thought at first!

The last step consisted in installing a couple of Queen’s English voices on the devices and oh surprise, the fix was completed! All of it managed under 10 minutes (not too bad after a couple of weeks of struggle)! My only comment at this precise moment was the one I was given by Mr Cruftbox a couple of days ago: “Do you guys think I got my job without having a minimum of technology skills?”…

So to answer my initial question: It takes 3 geeks to fix a GPS system! There is definitely a future for “Geek Squad”!

“Footb… sorry Soccer” gets big in the US!

As much as I despise the Beckhams and the publicity stunt around their arrival in Los Angeles, one thing that has changed over the last couple of weeks is that the beautiful sport, the footie or the soccer on this side of the pond had got finally noticed by the medias and doesn’t seem to be any longer “that sport loved by the Mexican community!”…

Apart from the red carpet laid down at LAX for the Becks’ arrival, the stupid documentary about Posh moving to the US and the Chelsea vs. Galaxy game last weekend, it seems that even the notorious LA Times is embracing the trend and this morning, as I opened my daily delivered newspaper, I was shocked to see that football had its own section alongside the Calendar section, the California section and the 2 tons of adds wrapped inside the paper!

Next step: They might start to hire some real players and finally acquire some footbalistic skills! :)

OK, ok, I have got my iPhone!

So as the previous post “hinted”, I am now the proud owner of an iPhone…

So a couple of days ago, Mike called me, on my landline, at the office, from his own office, literally 2 doors down.

Call transcript:

Mike: “Are you in your office?”

(Mental answer: “Obviously yes as you just reached me there”)

(Second Mental answer: “What are you up to? You normally walk directly in my office”)

Cyril: “Yup, am here!”

Mike: “Don’t move then”

(Mental thought: Either it is really bad or….. IT IS AN IPHONE!!!)

Two seconds later, Mike walks in, holding the now famous black box containing the most desirable technology toy available  these days, and tells me that I now have to do some research on media delivery and hands me the box…

Officially, this iPhone is for research only… and believe me, I will dissect the beast or at least its software in every possible way… but I must as well admit I am so happy I got it and so far, it hasn’t left my side…

Full report about the device and its flaws (yes there are some, even to an Apple Fan Boy like me) in a couple of weeks…

The most irritating screen on earth!

Here I am… Finally having put my greedy hands on the most desirable gadget of the last 10 years, it seems that my lack of credit history in the US might prevent me to enjoy my brand new iPhone! I now have to wait for some email from AT&T, letting me know if I am allowed or not to open an account and get a new mobile (cell) number!

Uber-Grump!

Blackberry is back!

My new blackberry finally arrived today and I am back on the air! It is crazy how much one can rely on a little communication device, especially when lost in London under some torrential rain, trying to make it to the nearest airport (and failing)…

I can now as well share with you the last picture taken with my previous device, probably causing it to fail under the pouring water…

10 seconds before failing…(and being told that the tube network was flooded)

Please note that once I had crosse the street, every single shop on the right side of the picture went dark and sirens went off as a result of the power outage! Merveilleux!Â
