So not only have we found out that Microsoft might be hiding the truth with regards to Internet Explorer 8 and the Acid 2 test, it seems that the Redmond empire is not keen on eating their own dog food!
I happen to have tried this morning to perform a Software Update (sorry, Windows Update) on my Windows XP build using Internet Explorer 8 in native mode, and what did I get?!?!
I got “Please upgrade to Internet Explorer 5 or later”!!!
Last time I checked my maths book, it still mentioned something about 8 > 5 (note, strictly greater than… not greater or equal… not lesser)!
Come on Microsoft, can’t you guys talk together?!

IE 8 is still only at Beta 1. After years of writing browser detection code, my guess is that someone failed to update the detection code on the site and I doubt very much that the bug lies within the browser. In browser worlds there is 4x browsers and everyone else. 4x browsers had no DOM support at all. I am willing to be that the mistake in detection is that the old way of separating browsers may not hold true anymore.
I would also doubt the tests at acidtests.org until they bring their page up to current w3c.org standards too. I don’t want to speak without all the facts, however, with the heighten browser security, simply copying a complex JavaScript DOM tree and placing it outside of the intended URL will almost always skew the results.
Don’t confuse sloppy web design / development with the abilities of the browser. It is bad enough that Apple is becoming more and more like Microsoft with every release, but mac supporters need to avoid acting like windows supporters. Can’t we all just get along?
Fair point…
But if you add to this the fact that uninstalling IE8 results in a non functioning IE7, you get a very IE unhappy Tryphoon!
