In which we travel to Europe… LAST MONTH!

Once again, I have managed to elude my little blog for over a month and simply didn’t post anything about our current life, trips, etc. But we’ve done a lot since the last post…

So, last month, the entire family left sunny Los Angeles for a several weeks long trip back to Europe. Sarah and Thia had booked their tickets a long time ago and by pure luck, I had to attend a conference in London. I promise, no cheating, only pure luck.

Flight #1 LAX-LHR

We are back in London and are straying at the Royal Garden. It’s cold, sometimes rainy and I don’t see anything of the city. My days are basically the following: Wake up early (6:30), get ready, meet Yoshi at Starbucks, jump on the tube, go to the BBC Broadcasting Center, attend 8 hours of meetings, sleep for at least an hour of these meetings due to jet lag, jump back on the tube, go to Hammersmith, do a couple of emails, go to pub, drink beer, have dinner, go back to hotel, sleep. Just as if I was still living and working there… Honestly, far from being my best trip to London!

Sarah, on the other hand, had some slightly different days. Meet with friends or parents during the day, enjoy the parks with Thia (feed ducks), walk on the streets of London (Oxford St., New Bond St. King’s Road), see all the nice parts of town, see more friends, do shopping! A perfect tourist life! :) She had a blast!

The few highlights of that week for me were the following:

- As Sarah had managed to organize a little gathering of all our friends, we spent a cool night at our former local , “The Salisbury Tavern”, drinking beer, wine & champagne, while chatting, as if we never left…

- Dinners with friends (Chris and team, Nono & Bea, Jef, Grant & Antony)

- I met a Dalek!

Flight #2 LHR-CDG

We then left London, boarded our second flight and went to see my parents in France. France remains France and the first thing that we were told once there was that we should not count on any form of public transport as there was a nationwide strike going on. Luckily, we had a rental car and we avoided being blocked by French culture!

We stopped on our way there in Paris and spent a night with our dear friends Allison, Alex and Pipo. The kids had a blast together and so did the dads… I spent most of the time there with Alex looking at the set of games included in the “Orange Box” being played!

The following day, we managed to have lunch with Thia’s Godparents, Jean & Audrey as well as the newly wed Caro & Momo in downtown Paris. Our lunch barely finished, we rushed to Langres and 3-4 hours later finally arrived.

While in Langres, traditions had to be respected. Long aperitifs in various bars (Thia can now sit on a bar stool and order her juice), the annual family Christmas dinner and the gifts exchange (we will be in LA for Christmas so better do it while we are all together).

The sad news is that one of my old time friend and bar owner Fabrice has decided to sell his business and the next time we will be in town, his bar should be either closed or transformed. Bye bye “Le Café du Musée a.k.a. the Bikers bar”.

After a couple of days, we decided to take a trip to Dijon, my old Uni town and do some more Christmas shopping while there. And what did we see there? What did we enjoy? A French speciality: A street protest!!! Students, state employees, etc, hands in hands… The main street was packed, slogans were shouted and sausages were sold on the side of the protest. Did I mention that we were in France?

This year again, for the second time, I had the honor of being the one who takes our traditional family “Xmas Dinner Picture” as Dad is now rapidly declining and seems to have forgotten how to operate a camera, after well over 30 years of his life taking pictures on a daily basis… Alzheimer is a bad thing! Diner was fab.. Aperitif with Champagne (a little magnum), Foie Gras, Oysters, Smoked Salmon, Snails, Boudin Blanc, etc… 3 hours later, we were done, full, barely able to move!

And Thia, as you can guess, had a blast opening her pre-Christmas presents!

From there, we went back to Paris for our last night in France and had an improvised dinner  with Caro & Momo at my old local, “Le Vieux Logis”. The place hasn’t changed with theyears, the menu is still the same, written on a paper tablecloth, and I had to enjoy a little French delicasy: The Famous “Andouillette”.

Flight #3 CDG-LHR

Another day, another flight. Thia is so getting used to the routine of the check-in, boarding, snacks, drinks, landing…

blog_071219_11.JPG

Nothing to report at that point… Well, we don’t know yet, but all our bags have been left behind in Paris and we are about to land in Newcastle with only what we wear and what we are allowed to carry with us on the plane…

Flight #4 LHR-NCL

As hinted, we land in Newcastle and wait for our bags. Nothing. Nothing and nothing… We then start filing the loss of luggage and have to deal with the local crew. Slight issue for me. Their strong “Jordy” accent! So for the first couple of days, we have enjoyed some interesting 3-ways discussions with the local BA staff talking to Sarah, Sarah translating to my right ear, me answering (no, they didn’t need a translator to understand me!) and them replying. Finally our bags arrive “by the twenty-three flight, man” (understand here 2:40PM or Twenty to Three, Sir) and all was good.

Same as in Langres with my parents, Sarah’s parents had organized our second Christmas dinner and we enjoyed it on the Sunday night, as well as the gifts exchange

Flight #5 NCL-LHR

My trip in Newcastle is short. Very short and after a couple of days, I have to go back to London (Mike called me while at my parents and I had to shorten my trip by a day or two). I am back in London and spend the night with my little bro’ Jef. The night is too short, the pubs close to early and we are both tired. Tomorrow night, I’ll be back in California…

Flight #6 LHR-LAX

I woke up that day to the sight of the London wintery weather. It is cold, grey, raining and totally foggy. I want to go home, to my large house, my cars and my garden… :) (well, I don’t really want to leave my friends and family, but anyways, I have to go!)

blog_071219_12.JPG

So Sarah and Thia stayed behind and enjoyed another 2 weeks of Britishness while I was having the house for myself and discovering certain parts of LA.

Sweet note: On her way back, Thia clocked her first 10,000 air miles on one trip and got a little certificate for it!

A simple evening at home…

blog_070927.jpg

Well, we might be far away from what we call home, and many of my friends often mention the lack of quality of the food over here, the fact that this place is full of fat people, etc…

Well, let me tell you one thing… Think again!

After Sarah had been shopping yesterday, I was lucky enough to indulge myself with a little French “degustation” platter last night made of fresh baguette, some French cheese (”President” Camembert, “President” Brie, “St-Augur” blue cheese, fresh goat cheese and hard spanish ewe cheese), all of this rinsed with a couple of glasses of a Cotes du Ventoux (Rhone).

It can’t get any better than this…

Here comes the rain…

blog_070921.jpg

Well, I just can’t believe it but one of the headline news tonight in Los Angeles is that “The Rain is Coming”… It is actually currently raining in Malibu and we are tracking its progress live on TV. Should hit us around 9PM (80% chance)… Well, actually, IT IS RAINING!!!

Still… Rain… Headline…

Baffled!

PS: Well, I have been carrying my barbour jacket all day, just in case the rain makes it to Burbank by the time I leave the office… Seems that I might need it

We’re moving (again)

blog_082807.jpg

Some of you might already know, but after 6 months in Montrose, we have decided to go back to Burbank, our first home far away from home…

Many reasons to that, including the fact that Thia goes to school there, Sarah’s gym is there and my office is there. So, after several weeks of house hunting (and 2 broken leases), we have finally found the house of our dream, in Toluca Lake, home of various celebrities including Scott Weiland from Velvet Revolver.

Today is the big day and I will have to drive a big truck for the first time of my life…

7:00AM: We’re ready to rock and just about to start moving stuff!

Pictures of the new house itself in the PrettyPix Californication  section.

More later!

6 months check up

blog_070821.jpg

Oh my God! It has already been 6 months! Well, actually 6 months and 2 weeks to be precise… Free time has been rare over the last couple of weeks and I have been unable to sit down and write about our first major milestone in the US…

So, in a nutshell, these first 6 months have gone at the speed of light. We have kept busy… Insanely busy!

It all started with the first hesitant steps in early Feb, the discovery of our new universe, including the hilarious first food shopping the night of our arrival, totally jet-lagged, unable to find anything we knew.

The first 24 hours were followed by the couple of weeks of insane discovery programm (one part of LA a day) and the major pain of paperwork in early March (and the vicious circle around credit and utilities), the driving licenses and the new cars for the both of us.

Somewhere in between, we moved to Montrose and went through the real adaptation phase and the first reality check. We were no longer tourists, no real residents yet, but stuck somewhere in between, learning a new thing almost every day (and this so far hasn’t stopped yet).

So, discussing this milestone with Mike on Friday, the mentor asked the pupil another one of his tricky question which was: “So what is the main difference between the UK and here?”. I didn’t even go over the usual cliches (weather, space, cable TV, large cars and fat people) but thought more about how people are, how people behave here… and this is on its own, a major difference between the new world and the old world…

First thing first: The layer of bulls**** or fake “Politically Correct” bollocks! It seems that no one here is used to be yelled at and finishes every discussion with a “have a GREAAAT day!” despite not caring at all how the rest of your day will be. Passed the fact that this sounds very polite, we tend to wrap every chat, every communication and relation with some kind of artificial sweetener, using numeral PC formulas, always going around what the matter is without really nailing it on the head. Why not calling a cat a cat?!? If someone sucks (e.g. a rep from Charter Cable on the phone), tell them! And replace the “Have a great day!” by “Thank you for having been so useless!”. If someone doesn’t understand after the 3rd call to the very same desk what your request is, RAISE YOUR VOICE. Let them know that they are making you lose your time and that it is time to go for plan B….

Plan B might be the other main difference… Or the lack of it actually! It seems that everything around here is scripted. Every request has been planned in advance and has an answer ready to come out of the “Book of Rules”. Even the barista at Starbucks follows a methodical plan and set of instructions. So asking anything out of “the plan” often results in a pair of starry eyes, a puzzled face  (or a long silence if on the phone) and a desperate need for a plan B, a place to hide and a hug from Mummy (sorry Mommy!)…

Speaking about Mommy, the last main difference to me is that it seems that a large percentage of the population here has been totally infantilized. They’re just big kids that don’t use their brains and accept every stimuli and set of directions given to them… TV is king (I won’t complain, it provides me my pay check) and media is gospel. Vacations are not an adventure or a discovery experience  but a trip to the nearest entertainment park where everything is predigested for you from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed. There is no space for self decision, second thoughts or non scripted surprises. And to make sure that no such thing happens, everything is subject to a disclaimer: “Achtung, Achtung, trying to dry your pet in your microwave oven might result is sudden and painful death of the animal”. “Achtung, Achtung, you live in California, you might hence experience earthquakes that might damages the content of your home!”. No s*** Sherlock!?! Come on guys, grow up and try new things! :-)

But to be fair, all in all, life here is pretty sweet and despite these slight differences (which can be sometimes annoying), this all experience has been pretty positive. People are extremely polite and helpful (a vast improvement compared to the average London Bus driver). Thia is enjoying the sun, the pool and sushi. Sarah is getting fitter by the day, thanks to gym, pilates and other physical activities and I love the new job. Next step.. we might move back to Burbank soon…

One thing I am still missing though:  Footy and Rugby at the pub with Jef, Nono and the pack!

So here ends my little list of major differences and our first 6 months check up!
