In which I feel unconfortable around the edges…

This week was all about eTech for us, the emerging technology organized by Tim O’Reilly publishing group in San Diego. This year’s eTech was my second appearance at the event and I finally started to recognize faces and go and engage with some of the people I respect a lot in this hackers’ universe (hacking being the main theme of Tim O’Reilly keynote this year).

But this year, we weren’t just there as  participant but as sponsors as well and Disney threw a rather nice party on Tuesday evening, right after (if not slightly overlapping) the EFF fundraiser event. So after a light indian curry (need food before booze), Mike, Yoshi and I reached the party and were soon joined by way more people…

And as you would have expected, many well known members of the blogosphere were there, including Boing Boing’s Cory Doctorow (baaad father), Laughingsquid’s Scott Beale and more…

The party itself was fun except for one thing: Our party organizers (HR/PR) had insisted, despite several warnings, that every attendant of the evening would have to add a little sticker to the conference badges, reflecting their sector of activity (designer, programmer, technology, exec, etc) which was, to me, going totally against the spirit of eTech (Simply take a look at Ignite evening, no one cares about your position in the food chain, just come and share your project/opinion/point of view in a fair and equal manner). I personally refused to get the little sticker on my badge and found another way to get my 2 free drinks.

As this wasn’t humiliating enough, Mike was told in his face by some journalist that this sticker thing was stupid, bad, effin’ this, effin’ that (or something similar). Well, the journalist we are talking about is simply the  “Wired Magazine” Editor in Chief! OUCH! Hopefully the dude will blog about it and we will be able to print it and share it with the great minds behind the sticky thing concept!

At some point in the evening, I realized that someone was shooting some form of interview and as any good mosquito on a summer night, I rushed towards the light. I there met another famous eTecher, Johannes Grenzfurthner, artist, activist, Monochrom’s represenative, fully dressed in Soviet Uniform, wearing his Nikita Chrusov’s eTech Speaker badge. The prank is obvious and entertaining, a polite version of Borat, without the fart jokes! Pose, picture and I moved on to the bar.

But right before leaving the party, I recognized Violet Blue, sex columnist, writer, blogger also known for her Steve Job’s encouter at Macworld! Remembering el Jobso’s attitude when asked for a picture with her, I walked towards her group and kindly asked if I could have my picture taken with her. She obviously agreed (“I, of course, said yes (no Jobs am I)”) and picture was taken…

She then started explaining to me (after having realized that there was a Disney badge under my EFF T-Shirt) that Johannes had been kicked out of the party by our own PR people… I asked her to repeat, willing to be sure I heard correctly and then felt slightly ashamed! We parted and I went back to the guys, explaining them what just happened, unable to do anything or changed what hapened.

One one hand, yes, Johannes played prankster and it did work! He was asked to leave, he was able to put a great show on and he got more attention than almost anyone else that night but on the other hand I absolutely doubt the plan was be come and attack Disney head to head! This is eTech for God’s sake! Not NAB or the Oscars. I know we tend to be paranoid about our image and the rest, but here, it simply backfired!

Next year, HR/PR people, please do your homework and study your audience before getting pranked again!

In which I drive 500 miles (and we enjoy a nice break out of LA)

DSCF7432.JPG

In this holiday season, nothing much goes on at the office so I decided to take the week off between Xmas and New Year and finally take the family out of the Thirty Miles Zone also known as Los Angeles…

After gathering intel from various coworkers and friends, we did set our mind up to a trip to Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo (SLO). So Wednesday evening, we decided to book a hotel, look at the map and set up stops and places to visit…

At first Sarah wasn’t that sure of my driving and kept offering to swap with me, until finally asking if she could drive from Santa Barbara to SLO, but I had to make it clear that practice makes things better and I was allowed to get back behind the wheel after a pretty poor meal on the beach in Santa Barbara, only punctuated by an attack of a group os seagulls…

DSCF7353.JPG

After another couple of hours of driving, we finally made it to SLO and our hotel. Thanks to Expedia, everything was fine, room was booked OK and Thia had a large grown up bed just for her…

Day 2 of the break was the touristic day and resulted in the visit of Pismo Beach and its surfers (Thia met a Pelican) and the Hearst Castle, which against all odds, was extremely nice.

You might wonder why the suspicion? Well, what could go wrong when an American multi-zillionaire decides to buy castles, churches, missions, roman vilas and God knows what in Europe and Asia and works on a architectural mash-up on the top of a hill, on a 770 hectares piece of land, while running close to 30 businesses? Well, everything! But not this time… (See pics)

DSCF7377.JPG

Our last day was mainly spent on the road, giving however a second chance to Santa Barbara, having blamed the guide and stopped at the harbor there. And this time, we really got why this is called the “Riviera of the US”… It just felt like Nice/Cannes and it has been decided that we will have to go back there at some point…

So all in all, cool little break, great sceneries and definitely  a new will to explore more of what this country has to offer!

As usual, more pictures in the pics section…

In which we travel to Europe… LAST MONTH!

Once again, I have managed to elude my little blog for over a month and simply didn’t post anything about our current life, trips, etc. But we’ve done a lot since the last post…

So, last month, the entire family left sunny Los Angeles for a several weeks long trip back to Europe. Sarah and Thia had booked their tickets a long time ago and by pure luck, I had to attend a conference in London. I promise, no cheating, only pure luck.

Flight #1 LAX-LHR

blog_071219_5.JPG

We are back in London and are straying at the Royal Garden. It’s cold, sometimes rainy and I don’t see anything of the city. My days are basically the following: Wake up early (6:30), get ready, meet Yoshi at Starbucks, jump on the tube, go to the BBC Broadcasting Center, attend 8 hours of meetings, sleep for at least an hour of these meetings due to jet lag, jump back on the tube, go to Hammersmith, do a couple of emails, go to pub, drink beer, have dinner, go back to hotel, sleep. Just as if I was still living and working there… Honestly, far from being my best trip to London!

Sarah, on the other hand, had some slightly different days. Meet with friends or parents during the day, enjoy the parks with Thia (feed ducks), walk on the streets of London (Oxford St., New Bond St. King’s Road), see all the nice parts of town, see more friends, do shopping! A perfect tourist life! :) She had a blast!

The few highlights of that week for me were the following:

- As Sarah had managed to organize a little gathering of all our friends, we spent a cool night at our former local , “The Salisbury Tavern”, drinking beer, wine & champagne, while chatting, as if we never left…

- Dinners with friends (Chris and team, Nono & Bea, Jef, Grant & Antony)

- I met a Dalek!

Flight #2 LHR-CDG

We then left London, boarded our second flight and went to see my parents in France. France remains France and the first thing that we were told once there was that we should not count on any form of public transport as there was a nationwide strike going on. Luckily, we had a rental car and we avoided being blocked by French culture!

We stopped on our way there in Paris and spent a night with our dear friends Allison, Alex and Pipo. The kids had a blast together and so did the dads… I spent most of the time there with Alex looking at the set of games included in the “Orange Box” being played!

The following day, we managed to have lunch with Thia’s Godparents, Jean & Audrey as well as the newly wed Caro & Momo in downtown Paris. Our lunch barely finished, we rushed to Langres and 3-4 hours later finally arrived.

blog_071219_1.JPG

While in Langres, traditions had to be respected. Long aperitifs in various bars (Thia can now sit on a bar stool and order her juice), the annual family Christmas dinner and the gifts exchange (we will be in LA for Christmas so better do it while we are all together).

blog_071219_8.JPG

The sad news is that one of my old time friend and bar owner Fabrice has decided to sell his business and the next time we will be in town, his bar should be either closed or transformed. Bye bye “Le Café du Musée a.k.a. the Bikers bar”.

blog_071219_9.JPG

After a couple of days, we decided to take a trip to Dijon, my old Uni town and do some more Christmas shopping while there. And what did we see there? What did we enjoy? A French speciality: A street protest!!! Students, state employees, etc, hands in hands… The main street was packed, slogans were shouted and sausages were sold on the side of the protest. Did I mention that we were in France?

blog_071219_7.JPG

This year again, for the second time, I had the honor of being the one who takes our traditional family “Xmas Dinner Picture” as Dad is now rapidly declining and  seems to have forgotten how to operate a camera, after well over 30 years of his life taking pictures on a daily basis… Alzheimer is a bad thing! Diner was fab.. Aperitif with Champagne (a little magnum), Foie Gras, Oysters, Smoked Salmon, Snails, Boudin Blanc, etc… 3 hours later, we were done, full, barely able to move!

blog_071219_3.JPG

And Thia, as you can guess, had a blast opening her pre-Christmas presents!

blog_071219_2.JPG

From there, we went back to Paris for our last night in France and had an improvised dinner  with Caro & Momo at my old local, “Le Vieux Logis”. The place hasn’t changed with theyears, the menu is still the same, written on a paper tablecloth, and I had to enjoy a little French delicasy: The Famous “Andouillette”.

Flight #3 CDG-LHR

Another day, another flight. Thia is so getting used to the routine of the check-in, boarding, snacks, drinks, landing…

blog_071219_11.JPG

Nothing to report at that point… Well, we don’t know yet, but all our bags have been left behind in Paris and we are about to land in Newcastle with only what we wear and what we are allowed to carry with us on the plane…

Flight #4 LHR-NCL

As hinted, we land in Newcastle and wait for our bags. Nothing. Nothing and nothing… We then start filing the loss of luggage and have to deal with the local crew. Slight issue for me. Their strong “Jordy” accent! So for the first couple of days, we have enjoyed some interesting 3-ways discussions with the local BA staff talking to Sarah, Sarah translating to my right ear, me answering (no, they didn’t need a translator to understand me!) and them replying. Finally our bags arrive “by the twenty-three flight, man” (understand here 2:40PM or Twenty to Three, Sir) and all was good.

Same as in Langres with my parents, Sarah’s parents had organized our second Christmas dinner and we enjoyed it on the Sunday night, as well as the gifts exchange

blog_071219_4.JPG

Flight #5 NCL-LHR

My trip in Newcastle is short. Very short and after a couple of days, I have to go back to London (Mike called me while at my parents and I had to shorten my trip by a day or two). I am back in London and spend the night with my little bro’ Jef. The night is too short, the pubs close to early and we are both tired. Tomorrow night, I’ll be back in California…

Flight #6 LHR-LAX

I woke up that day to the sight of the London wintery weather. It is cold, grey, raining and totally foggy. I want to go home, to my large house, my cars and my garden… :) (well, I don’t really want to leave my friends and family, but anyways, I have to go!)

blog_071219_12.JPG

So Sarah and Thia stayed behind and enjoyed another 2 weeks of Britishness while I was having the house for myself and discovering certain parts of LA.

Sweet note: On her way back, Thia clocked her first 10,000 air miles on one trip and got a little certificate for it!

Blackberry is back!

My new blackberry finally arrived today and I am back on the air! It is crazy how much one can rely on a little communication device, especially when lost in London under some torrential rain, trying to make it to the nearest airport (and failing)…

I can now as well share with you the last picture taken with my previous device, probably causing it to fail under the pouring water…

blog_070725_02.jpg

10 seconds before failing…(and being told that the tube network was flooded)

Please note that once I had crosse the street, every single shop on the right side of the picture went dark and sirens went off as a result of the power outage! Merveilleux!

British summer…

underground_map.jpg

Yesterday was the day I  was meant to use my visit to London to attend some of my best friends’ wedding…

All stars seemed to have aligned correctly… Work was done. Shopping for Sarah and Thia was done… Even my timing was good (even has planned for an extra hour contingency plan)…

One thing I hadn’t planned with was a huge thunderstorm and a close to total failure of the London Underground…

So here I am, shortly before 12, bags on my shoulder, leaving our Hammersmith office, having checked tube maps (and possible issue on the network) & the Stansted Express timetable, just about to get out of the building to get on the Hammersmith & City line… and then I see a major thunderstorm above London, streets are filled with water, cars are stopping and I hear that one of my former colleague has had to leave in a hurry because his house might have been flooded!

So I rush to the tube station, only to find out that the Hammersmith & City line (pink) is closed due to flooding. I am then advised to cross the road and hop on the Picadilly line…

No stress…

Timing is still good and I have extra time built in… Only issue at this point in time, the rain is so strong that my blackberry got totally wet and seems to have died as a result of that forced shower!

Once in the tube station, I am told that the eastbound Picadilly line platform is flooded and that I have to go westbound for one stop and change train to come back. No biggie! I hence find myself going towards Heathrow, planning to change in Acton Town and resume my route towards Liverpool Street… The only problem is that once in Acton Town, we are told that the Picadilly line is flooded as well and are told to get on the District Line… The slowest line in the world… So back towards Hammersmith and hopefully Earl’s Court. Arrived in Hammersmith, we are instructed to abandon the District Line and go on the Picadilly again. A train is waiting there for us. I board the train and off we go… and stop… Time is getting tight but I have faith!Next stop, we are once again told that the Picadilly line is now totally dead and that we need to go back on the District line!!!! About to lose my temper but hey, I am going to Caro and Momo’s wedding!

And then the best part of it… Earl’s Court is now closed to all trains and the next stop is Gloucester Road. Great!Until our train simply stops between West Kensington and Gloucester Road and remains there for well above an hour… Signal failure, flooding, track failure, despatch gone silent (resulting in our driver using the track telephone)… The full monty!

Over 2 1/2 hour to finally having ended up only 2 tube stops away from where I initially started! Result: Flight at 3:00PM, 45 minutes are required to get to the airport from Liverpool street. Need to be there an hour in advance, or in my usual case, 30 minutes… and it is now 2:30PM… so even if I can travel at the speed of light, I have missed my check-in window and hence my flight!

Time for Plan B!

Once in Gloucester Road (actually where my hotel was), the driver strongly suggests to us to change train. We are then told that anyways, the District Line is shut down past Gloucester Road and the same applies to the Central Line… Leaving me with going back to the Picadilly Line… Horror!

Well, the Picadilly seems to work OK at that point in time! Decision in made to stop at Green Park (very central location), find a Starbucks and try to book some other method of transportation to reach Nantes… Only issue with that… One way ticket, late booking, etc… Fees are ridiculously high and the best option would left me stranded in Nantes (France) at approximately midnight, with no place to stay and the next available ferry to the “Ile d’Yeu” 40 miles and 8 hours away all that for a whooping $600 on top of the $500 I already paid for my missed return flight, not even including the 2 nights at the local hotel.

So call made to Sarah at home, Jef, Caroline (the Bride) ; all of these courtesy of Skype ; and the new plan is to stay with Jef until Sunday and fly home, simply passing on the wedding!

I am totally and utterly gutted to say the least, being so close and still unable to make it! I guess I won’t see Caro, Momo, Kate and Alexis, flown in from HK and many other friends from either Paris or London this time…

So plan C is now going back to Jef’s place and flying back home on Sunday (well, today’s flight HAD to be fully booked)Â
